The title of psychologist
Since 1993, the title of psychologist has been legally protected, and only individuals who hold the required degree and are properly registered with the Commission of Psychologists have the legal right to use it.
The protection of the title of "psychologist" has to main objectives :
- Protecting the profession as a whole by ensuring that not just any professional can use the title of psychologist if they do not meet the legal requirements..
- La protection des patients/clients qui doivent pouvoir s’adresser à un professionnel qui est bien en droit de porter le titre de psychologue s’il se revendique comme tel.
Outre une reconnaissance des compétences académiques et professionnelles du psychologue, le titre garantit aussi que celui-ci respecte des normes éthiques et déontologiques strictes, et qu’il est soumis au contrôle des conseils disciplinaires dans sa pratique.
This title applies to all sectors of the psychology profession (clinical psychology, including neuropsychology, educational psychology, research psychology and work and organisational psychology) as well as to all professional situations (self-employed, employees, etc.).
If a professional uses the title of psychologist without having the required diploma and without being registered with the Commission des Psychologues, he or she is abusing the title.
Why register?
Registration with the Commission of Psychologists is not only a legal requirement but also a mark of professionalism. By registering, you demonstrate your commitment to practicing your profession ethically, in line with the Code of Ethics for Psychologists. This registration reassures your patients or clients about the quality and integrity of your services.
When to register?
It's important to note that registration with the Commission of Psychologists is only possible after obtaining your diploma or certificate of completion. Once you have this document, you are finally eligible to register and officially use the title of psychologist!
We recommend registering as soon as you plan to start your career as a psychologist or when you intend to use the title in a professional context (e.g., on LinkedIn, your CV, etc.).
It is not necessary to register immediately after receiving your diploma if you do not yet plan to begin working or use the title of psychologist. Since registration is paid and must be renewed annually, it's wise to register at the right time.

For (future) graduates in clinical psychology: Registration with the Commission of Psychologists remains mandatory to use the title of psychologist, even if you possess or are awaiting your clinical psychologist VISA and certification.
